WE DIG DEEPER - Mark GV Taylor (Reference Point) - September 2023 [appx 103 mins]

JOHN STANEFER & FRIENDS : EASTER SUITE (Edit)
The opening track is taken from the 1977 ‘For The Love Of Art’ album which is also featured on the Various Artists - ‘Reference Point’ compilation released at the start of September on BBE Records.

SOYUZ : HOYHON NPOMEHA
Hailing from Belarus originally. One of my favourite groups of the last few years, especially the latest offering an album for Mr. Bongo Records in November 2022.

CICO : UN’AMICIZIA VERA
Late 1970s Balearic vibes from Italian Antonio Cico (drummer & keyboards)

KRISTINE SPARKLE : I’M GONNA LOVE YOU
Originally know under the artist name Christine Anne Authors from the mid-60s through to around 1973 when she changed her artist name to Kristine Sparkle.

TOM RAINER : I MISS YOU
American jazz pianist from Chicago. This one has a more AOR vibe with jazzy interludes on the keys

ALAN PRICE : GROOVY TIMES
Well known in the UK in the 60s & 70s scenes. Alan was in the original lineup of The Animals in the early 60s. Taken from his 1978 ‘England My England’ album, “Groovy Times” has a naïve touch to it in a slow-mo disco vibe.

CHARLES STEPNEY : THAT’S THE WAY OF THE WORLD
Recorded at the start of the 1970s in Charles's basement home studio in Chicago. Charles was experimenting with the new electronic kit available at the time, such as a basic tape sampler, and early incarnations of the Moog synth keyboard.
Charles had already gained success and recognition from the mid-60s onwards for arranging and producing artists like Terry Callier, Phil Upchurch, Ramsey Lewis, E.W.F., and Minnie Riperton, who was in Charles's own band The Rotary Connection before going solo. This is the original Demo version he made in that basement studio of an iconic soul tune. Made famous the world over in 1975 when Earth, Wind & Fire covered it.

GEORGE OTSUKA QUINTET : LOVING YOU
Staying with a connection to Charles Stepney, jazz man George Otsuka from Japan. Taken from his 1975 ‘Loving You George’ album. A great jazz cover version of Minnie Riperton and her timeless “Loving You” track.

RICK HENN & COMPANY : SQUEEZE BOX
Taken from the Soundtrack to the 1973 Surf Movie ‘A Sea For Yourself’, music by Hal Jepsen.

ALEX GOOSE & MATT ZARA : SINCE I LOST YOU
Reworking music composed by Italian Library Music maestro Giuliano Sorgini done back in 1980 originally

ORANGE COLORED SKY : WHO ARE YOU FOOLIN’
A Psychedelic/Soft Rock Band from the late 1960s through to 1973.

HAYES & VYAIN : NIGHTINGALE
A release from 1979 on the Americana tip with some jazz-style flute thrown in.

PACIFIC EXPRESS : ANGEL OF LOVE
A long-time favourite of mine when it comes to playing mid-tempo soul with an uplifting feel to it.
The band is from Cape Town in South Africa. Taken from their second album release ‘On Time’ released in 1978 on Gull Records.

S R BIFE : REGRESSO A BENIDORM
7” Release from Argentina in 1976.
Miguel Angel ‘Bife’ Provenzano - Guitarist & Arranger.

TIPSY : MADEIRA
A mid 1970s 7” Release from France on Library Music tip with a nod to Spain vibes-wise!

THE SOUTH HILL EXPERIMENT : SPAIN REFRAIN
A Modern release that also has a soundtrack/Library type of vibe to it. Taken from the band's ‘Moonshots’ album released in May 2023 and recorded in California

LITTO NEBBIA : QUERIDA MIUSI
As a collector of Argentine music (mostly jazz stuff) since 1995 when I started buying from record dealers in Buenos Aires (fun times indeed before the internet and PayPal). One of my personal favourite artists from Argentina. His career spans from the early 1960s up to the present day!

SANTANA : TELL ME ARE YOU TIRED
Mexican-born world-famous guitarist Carlos Santana cut this killer fusion-style tune with a soulful vocal from Greg Walker back in 1976.

KAIT DUNTON : EXTENDED WARRANTY
Brand new music that easily sounds like it could be a late 70s release.
Reminds me of early Patrice Rushen-type releases! Makes sense as Kait states this is a love letter to the sounds and instruments of 70s Jazz-Funk

BALA DESEJO : BAILE de MASCARAS
My favourite band to emerge from the ‘New School’ of Brazilian artists in the last five years or so.
Top quality arrangements, vocal harmonies & musicians. The band is a joy to behold live, full of energy with the vocals on point on all tracks.

JEFF SCOTT : MYSTERY OF YOU
Jeff hails from the Detroit area of Michigan. His debut album ‘This Feeling’ has a youthful image of Jeff looking like he could be Rick Astley’s brother! Just like Rick, Jeff has a great vocal voice to hand to lay down a quality AOR/Blue Eyed Soul cut recorded back in 1986. The players and production of tracks on the album are first-class throughout.

CY TIMMONS : HEY
Cy recorded a total of three albums from the period of 1972 through to the mid-1980s.
“Hey” is taken from his debut self-titled private press album.

KRISTI KIMSEY : AS I LOOK BACK
Tracks recorded between 1977 to 1979 by American singer Kristi and recorded by her husband to be Chris Kimsey. Chris began in the late '60s as a tape engineer and progressed to the production of artists, such as Led Zeppelin, Peter Frampton, and Rolling Stones to name a few big ones. The master tapes damaged in a flood were thought to be the end of the tracks Kristi his now wife had recorded. Then in the Covid lockdown when having a clear out they came across cassette tapes with the tracks on them that Chris had made in the various studios alongside the master tapes. Now a few years later and digitally re-mastered the tracks are now out on a Japanese vinyl album released by Bright Size Records of Tokyo.

BLACK & WARD : THIS IS MY CONFUSION
Vocal soul/pop duo from Toronto, Canada formed in 1971.

JIMMY PONDER : A TRIP TO THE STARS
Classic golden era 1970s jazz-fusion on the LRC/T.K. label out of Miami, released in 78’

SVEN WUNDER : TAKE A BREAK
Brilliant Modern Jazz/Library Music creator from Stockholm, Sweden. Taken from his ‘Late Again’ album released at the end of September 2023
